THE FACTUAL HISTORY: 1987 TO TODAY

1927 formed in Sydney in 1987 as a pop rock band.

The Nine Network's 'Hey Hey It's Saturday' series, televised Melbourne based Erik Weideman performing a cover version of The Police's hit single, ‘Roxanne’, during a segment called ‘Red Faces’.

Philip Campbell, ex drummer for Electric Panda’s, was at home in Sydney watching television when he saw Erik Weideman perform on ‘Red Faces’.  Impressed with Weideman’s vocals it was Campbell who contacted Garry Frost (ex Moving Pictures member) suggesting Erik could be the vocalist for a project the two had been thinking about.

Following up Philip’s suggestion, Garry contacted the Nine Network in an attempt to find Erik Weideman and offer him the role of lead vocals, guitar and keyboards … in a yet to be formed band … with yet to write songs.

Erik Weideman accepted and moved to Sydney.

Bill Frost was added to the lineup on bass guitar.

Philip Campbell opted out of the project upon suggestion of recording a studio album. Campbell, a highly technical jazz drummer, was not keen to enter into a recording studio, knowing that his drumming would likely be straightened out.

Charles Fisher agreed to record and produce the still developing band.

The first formative year involved numerous changes.  This ranged from musicians, to roles, to recording contributions, and, of course, the actual songs had to written, the production of which continued whilst in Charles Fisher’s recording studio.

Jon Carson, a highly skilled drummer, briefly took on the role of drums. However, with the band dynamics still under development, it was James Barton that was added to the lineup.

In 1988 the band was officially named 1927 and the debut album was released.

The lineup consisted of Erik Weideman on lead vocals, guitar and keyboard, James Barton on drums and backing vocals, Garry Frost on guitar, backing vocals and keyboard and Bill Frost on bass guitar and backing vocals.

In 1989 Garry Frost formally advised of his intention to leave the band.

Frost depart early in 1990, half way through the recording of the bands second album.

Also, during the recording of the second album, Charlie Cole, one of many keyboard players that contributed to the recording of the first album, joined the lineup.

In 1990, Dave Dwyer joined the lineup on guitar, backing vocals and keyboards.

In 1992, during the recording of the third album, Philip Campbell, the highly technical jazz drummer who originally suggested Erik Weideman for the role of vocals, was added to the lineup.

From the first formative years in 1987 to today, 1927 - the band - have never ‘disbanded’ nor ‘reformed’.  1927 is what it always was - a constantly evolving body of work with the unique voice, music, and songwriting of Erik Weideman.

1927 - the band - has now been recording studio albums and touring sold out shows for more than three decades … and counting.

THE ANSWERS …
… TO THE QUESTIONS

#1   HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE NAME?

“We were only weeks away from releasing the bands first single "That's When I Think Of You" and still had no band name that everyone could agree on. From memory some of the names that had been suggested were - Out Of The Blue, RX, Sanity Clause and 1927. The solution was to throw the lot into a hat and draw one out. 1927 was it. ” - 1927

#2   WHAT DOES 1927 MEAN?

“1927 came from something that was said around the studio during the recording of "…ish". "haven't heard you play so well since 1927…" etc. Food, dress sense, refreshments, farts - everything was fair game.” - 1927

#3   WHAT DOES ...ISH MEAN?

“That was another stupid thing doing the rounds during the recording of that record. "Oh that was good…ish…" or simply "…your vocal is sounding kinda …ish…" (not quite there). Then of course when asked what kind of band 1927 was the only honest reply was "rock…ish or pop…ish or… you get the idea.” - 1927
